our heritage and legacy
Franc Herle from Solčavan has an important place in the history of Slovenian mountaineering. He was a versatile athlete and climber. In 1939, together with Dušan Gradišnik from Celjan, he climbed the north face of the Polish Maidens, and then the north face of Veliki vrh. Both approaches were first ascents. Lučan Gustl Vršnik accompanied him on the north face of Ojstrica on 11 and 12 August 1941, where he introduced a new climbing technique: drilling rocks to drive wedges. This direction is known as the Herlet direction. He also climbed the directions in Rinka, Turska Gora, Raduha, and in winter from Mrzla Gora to Savinjska sedlo (Valent Vider, Notes on Solčava and its surroundings).
